Movie of the Week (belated): Cabin in the Woods

So this would have been movie of the week, but for some reason it came and went at the local Cineworld before we had chance to see it - a victim of coming out at the same time as a slew of other good movies and we waited too long and missed it. So I had to order the DVD and it arrived on Wednesday.

Without giving the game away this is a difficult movie to review, but I will say that it is not what you expect it to be - which is Good. On the surface it looks like a teen-gore-friends-trapped-in-remote-location type of movie. Well, it is and it isn't. Joss Whedon co-wrote and produced this, so expect the unexpected and the rather strange twist.

Also expect to see some of the Joss Wherdon regulars turning up. A tiny role for Tom Lenk, a slightly larger role for Amy Acker and a major role for Fran Kranz (Topher from Doll House) as the spaced-out Marty. There's Chris Hemsworth, too (I think this was filmed before Thor even though it was not released until afterwards) but Fran Kranz definitely stole the show if not the beauty contest.

Well worth seeing.

Nice to have my opinion backed up by a higher authority. I loved Topher in Dollhouse.
Yes, me too. It's all about redemption in the end.
How scary is it? I'd like to see it, but my fright threshold is low.
Well there's a lot of gore, in fact so much red that it's not shocking any more after a while. I didn't find it any scarier than Buffy with added blood. There are a couple of 'jump' moments but it was well within my scare threshold and I tend not to watch straightforward horror movies.
That sounds bearable: thank you.
